Lech L’cha & Vayeira – Genesis 12:1-17:7, Genesis 18:1-22:24

These portions contain a few articulations of the covenant God makes with Abraham. It is clear that this covenant is expansive in nature: Abraham is to be an “ancestor of many nations.” So too is the work we must do for justice in the world. It doesn’t end in our immediate communities, but includes the whole world. Abraham was the ancestor of many nations, so we are part of a family of many nations. The preacher on this day could encourage the congregation to care for the whole family—to work for justice in each aspect of the world, particularly when it comes to reproductive justice across economic and nationality barriers.
