Dear Senator/Representative ______________________:
I write to you with concern about the Helms and Hyde amendments, which foster inequality by prohibiting federal funding from supporting abortions. Millions of women, both in the U.S. and abroad, rely on federal money for their reproductive healthcare. Because of Helms and Hyde, they are forced to go through with unwanted pregnancies, pursue unsafe abortions and/or forego basic necessities like food and shelter.
As a person of faith, I am committed to the health and well-being of all people and have a responsibility to speak up for the those who are marginalized in society. Since the Helms and Hyde amendments disproportionately affect low-income women, they conflict with the ideal of justice that is intrinsic to my faith tradition and the faith traditions of many others. In limiting women’s choices, threatening their ability to feed and clothe their families, and even putting their lives at risk, Helms and Hyde violate my religious convictions.
I urge you to act to ensure reproductive healthcare is equally available for all women, regardless of income level and nationality. Helms and Hyde need to be repealed, but at the very least, Helms must be correctly interpreted so that in cases of incest, rape and danger to the life of the mother, women may obtain abortions.
Thank you for what you do each day for the public good. Please ensure that low-income women are not forgotten in the work that you do.
