Over the past few weeks, the staff of the Religious Institute has been traveling throughout North America working to promote sexual health, education, and justice in faith communities and society.
President and CEO, Rev. Debra Haffner, spent the weekend of June 4th-7th in Minneapolis, MN for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists’ Annual Conference.
That same weekend, Scholar in Residence, Drew Konow, traveled to Denver, CO to speak with MCC of the Rockies about the Religious Institute’s Gilead Sabbath Initiative. MCC of the Rockies incorporated many of the Religious Institute resources into their worship service, and Drew led an adult conversation after the service. Deputy Director Marie Alford-Harkey ventured South to Texas to keynote the Annual Adolescent Sexual Health Course offered by the University of Texas School of Public Health. Marie spoke on “Addressing Religious Concerns in Sexuality Education.” Marie’s talk built on the exciting work of the Religious Institute’s Religious Declaration on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing, Open Letter on Sexuality Education, and our many guidebooks on sexuality education. Marie’s keynote is one of the many ways that the Religious Institute has been building and strengthening networks in the Southern U.S.
While Marie was keynoting in Texas, Rev. Haffner was keynoting in Calgary, Canada. Debra spoke at the Calgary Sexual Health Centre’s Annual Meeting. Her talk was entitled “Lessons from a Life in Sexuality Education and Ministry.” She’s pictured here with Right to Love, a disability rights groups that came to hear her speak. Rev. Haffner will be on the road again at the end of June – off to the UUA General Assembly in Portland June 23-29th.
We’re on the road this summer…and we may be coming to your city next. Stay tuned!
