With Friday’s decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, same-sex couples throughout the country can now marry! This is a huge win for sexual justice and a major cause for celebration!
The Religious Institute is proud to have played a role in winning the right to marry for same sex couples. Informed, motivated faith leaders made a difference, as did thousands of people of faith like you who support the freedom to marry. More than a decade ago, the Religious Institute convened a group of faith leaders to develop the Open Letter to Religious Leaders on Marriage Equality to help clergy in every state become advocates. Nearly 3,000 religious leaders nationwide have endorsed this Open Letter. Show your support for marriage equality by endorsing the Open Letter on Marriage Equality.
This year, the Religious Institute worked with the lawyers to create the faith brief for the Supreme Court, and over 1,900 of our clergy member network signed onto the brief. The Religious Institute developed and coordinated the National Weekend of Prayer for the Freedom to Marry, engaging nearly 300 congregations representing 20 different denominations in 46 states across the country. They came together in prayer services and at vigils to pray that the values of values of love, justice, equality, and inclusion would prevail over fear and discrimination. In total, between 20,000 and 30,000 congregants prayed for the freedom to marry
Your prayers, public witness, endorsement, and support is helping change the world! Thank you for showing the court, the country, and your communities that people of faith support marriage for all Americans!
