Around the world, there are currently 247 people in jail or awaiting trial because of their sexual or gender identity. Seventy-nine countries criminalize consensual same-sex relationships, and in ten countries, homosexuality is a criminal offense punishable by death. Even in countries where LGBTQ identities are not criminalized, many LGBTQ people face violence, discrimination, and other significant barriers to sexual health, rights, and justice. In the United States, for example, there have been significant efforts to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people. Too often these acts of violence, discrimination, and persecution are justified in the name of religion. At the same time, many U.S. congregations have remained silent. Together, we must break the silence and end these injustices done in the name of religion.

Our community will witness and respond to the realities of LGBTQ people across the globe by observing a Gilead Sabbath on [INSERT DATE]. The Gilead Sabbath Initiative is a nationwide initiative to raise a faithful witness for global LLGBTQ justice and against LGBTQ violence and discrimination in the U.S. and worldwide.
