On August 11th and 12th, two months after the Pulse shooting in Orlando, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio spoke in Orlando at an anti-LGBTQ event called “Rediscovering God in America.” Alongside Trump and Rubio, the event featured religious leaders who claim LGBTQ people are demonic, that HIV/AIDS is God’s punishment, and that homosexuality should be outlawed. As we have learned too many times, using one’s power to lend credence to such hateful anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has violent consequences.
In response to the event, Religious Institute president and CEO Marie Alford-Harkey penned an op-ed for the Huffington Post called “Rediscovering God in Our LGBTQ Siblings.” She makes the case for why, as people of faith, we must hold those with power accountable for their words and actions while working to create a just world. We pray that all those who turn away from their neighbors may truly rediscover God—on the margins, among their LGBTQ siblings, in their midst.
